Player Profile: Alvaro Regalado
My time at Columbus State University in Georgia was an incredible experience, both on and off the court. While I’m not actively competing in tennis anymore, I still play local tournaments and stay involved through coaching.
I am the Director of Paddle and High Performance at the Orange Lawn Tennis Club in New Jersey. I teach about 30-35 hours weekly, balancing group clinics, private lessons, and team practices. I was introduced to paddle shortly after moving to New Jersey, once I had earned my MBA. Some members and pros at my club encouraged me to try it, and I was hooked almost immediately. I credit a lot of my early learning to the Orange Lawn members.
I’ve been playing paddle for about two years and started competing shortly after I began learning it. It’s been a fast and rewarding journey. I was able to transfer a lot of tennis skills—like court awareness, strategy, and technique—into paddle. I also spent countless hours practicing and studying the game, which helped me improve quickly.
My first paddle tournament was both nerve-wracking and exciting. I didn’t know what to expect, but I loved the energy and camaraderie. It was a learning experience that motivated me to keep improving. One of my favorite tournaments so far has been The Baltimore Open. The energy, the level of competition, and the memorable matches made it special. It was also my first tournament win on the APTA Tour.
I keep meals light and balanced during tournaments—usually something like eggs or oatmeal in the morning, a protein lunch, and snacks like bananas in between matches. Hydration is a big priority.
A good partner is someone who communicates well, stays positive, and adapts to challenges. Mutual trust and understanding on the court are essential for success. Jose and I have this chemistry on and off the court that makes it feel really special. The Regalazar shirts were a team effort! Jose and I wanted to bring a bit of personality and style to the court.
The best compliment I’ve received is that I make my partners feel confident and comfortable on the court, no matter the situation, and I don’t put a lot of pressure on them.
For me, the best part is the combination of strategy, athleticism, and teamwork. It’s a sport that constantly challenges you while getting a great sense of community. My favorite and best shot is the drop volley—it’s reliable and allows me to control the point.
Staying present and focusing on the next point is key. I try to control my breathing and remind myself to stay composed, even during tough moments. When I’m not having a good personal moment on the court, or I’m not playing my best, I like to talk to my partner and get some support. Jose and B (during mixed) do an excellent job with that.
I love drilling! My favorite drill is the “roller to cutter” sequence, which helps with touch and precision around the net.
Be patient with yourself and focus on consistency over power. Learning how to use screens effectively and when to be offensive can elevate your game significantly.
B is a very important part of my life, and it’s amazing that we’ve known each other since we were small kids. Winning Mixed Nationals with her was one of the best experiences I have had on a paddle court. She’s always been incredibly supportive, and I’m grateful to have her by my side as a life partner. She’s truly the best!
On my days off, I enjoy relaxing, spending time with my beautiful girlfriend, and exploring new places. If you’re visiting Spain, I highly recommend Madrid for its rich culture, Valencia for its beaches, and the Basque Country for its incredible food. And of course, don’t miss my hometown, Alicante, for its charm and cuisine!
