Stephen’s tennis career was exceptional, playing high-level Junior Tennis in South Africa, having a stellar run at University of Alabama, joining the South African Davis Cup team, and competing on the ATP Tour.

In 2009, Johan du Randt cajoled Stephen onto the paddle tennis courts. They played one season together, making it to the Round of 16 at the Men’s National Championship.

Then, after an eight-year hiatus from tournament play, Stephen paired up with Johan again, competing in two events in 2017 and four events in 2018. Deemed ready for primetime, Stephen (with Johan) won or was a finalist in four premier events in the 2019-2020 season, including his first Men’s Nationals title. He repeated his Men’s Nationals win in 2021 and won again in 2023.

Stephen was known for his precise volleys, his delight in quick pace of play, his calm demeanor, and his solid sportsmanship.

Congratulations to Stephen Mitchell for his election into the APTA Platform Tennis Hall of Fame.
